Academic Support Instructor

Daily 3:00pm – 7:00pm. This position also includes work on some Saturdays; the summer program requires morning shift 8:00am-12:30pm

Position Summary

The Homework Help Instructor is responsible for implementing and managing a comprehensive academic support homework help program for elementary school members.  The Homework Help Instructor works as part of the Gary Comer Youth Center program leadership team to insure well-coordinated and effective academic supports are happening for our elementary age youth. 

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Strong classroom management and program implementation skills.
  • Experience in development and implementation of youth programs and initiatives.
  • Must demonstrate cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families and community members in our care.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of guidance and discipline principles as well as conflict resolution strategies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations as well.
  • Competency in office and school based software programs including MS office applications.
  • Demonstrated leadership of youth development/programming principles.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage projects independently.
  • Readiness to work on team projects.
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Lead instructor of the homework help program that operates daily after school.
  • Serves as the lead with elementary schools and parents - communicating individual student success.
  • Designs and implements programs and supports for school success outcomes for our elementary school members including a homework help and tutoring program during the school year.
  • Required to develop program plans; complete program evaluations and all other necessary reporting for assigned programs.
  • Assist the program director and other staff with the organization and implementation of academic related special activities/events, as well as spring break & specialty camps.
  • Assists with supervision of academic instructors for the summer program.
  • Supervises interns, volunteers and work study participants during the school year assigned to academic based programs.
  • Operate a movie club for elementary school students on Fridays with other staff.
  • Monitor and record outcomes as a result of member participation in academic programs.
  • Attend various meetings/trainings; provide written update of information to the Program Director.
  • Responsible for obtaining program equipment and supplies.
  • Complete monthly and quarterly reports (web-based reporting specifically).
  • Lunch room and snack duty daily for meal service when assigned.
  • Supports the mission of GCYC.
  • Works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.
  • Is committed to the safety and development of all GCYC members.
  • Takes on other duties as needed.
  • Serves as a role model for youth and community.
  • Completes special projects as assigned by the Program Director or Center Director.
Experience & Education
  • Minimum of a 2-3 years of academic support services or instruction in a related field. Teaching experience is a plus.
  • Three to five years demonstrated youth development experience (direct service program implementation).
  • Some completed college coursework is required. College/junior college degree preferred.
Environment & Working Conditions
  • Extended standing and extended movement is required for daily programs, field trips and special events. Majority of the work is conducted in a classroom setting with 25-35 elementary school youth attending each session daily.
Physical Work Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to walk and complete rounds in the classroom/program area
