Position Summary

The Leaps and Bounds Instructor facilitates the social, emotional and academic growth of 9th graders at the Comer Education Campus.  These goals will be accomplished by co-facilitating the high school transition focused Leaps and Bounds Program at Gary Comer Youth Center (GCYC) and by coaching youth who are struggling to meet academic targets in 9th grade.  The Instructor will co-lead large group learning in addition to meeting with youth individually to maximize potential growth in the above stated areas.

Instructors will foster a positive, youth-centered learning environment, leading activities about executive -functioning, social emotional learning and academic mindset.  Instructors will also model and maintain professional expectations for youth such as timeliness, strong communication skills and positive relationship-building.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelors degree
  • Two or more years experience working with middle school and/or high school aged students.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot and problem-solve effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student-centered instructional methodologies and classroom management skills.
  • Sensitivity to the need and experience of low-income and potential, first-generation college students.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse and multicultural youth and staff.
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Implement daily lessons focused on academic mindset, non-cognitive skills and social/emotional learning.
  • Maintain a positive, youth-centered environment.
  • Coach individual youth toward academic and social emotional goals.
  • Collect and organize data to assess program effectiveness, including program evaluations and other reporting.

  • Work collaboratively in a team setting, serving the needs of the youth.
  • Assist with field trips, special events or other duties as needed.
