Program Specialist – Civic Engagement, Social & Leadership Development Focus

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Classroom management skills that are engaging and age appropriate.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Able to communicate effectively with students, co-workers, stakeholders and families.
  • Demonstrates strong accuracy in writing reports and communication.
  • Demonstrates understanding of youth development/programming principles.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of guidance and discipline principles as well as conflict resolution strategies.
  • Demonstrates cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families and community members in our care.
  • Competency in MS office applications specifically Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Designs and implements GCYC leadership and character development programs. Also responsible for design and implementation of gender specific programming for middle school and teenage girls.
  • Serves as the lead for the financial literacy education initiative for all youth and supportive programming for adults
  • Serves as an Instructor for 21st Century Skills education for teen employees and junior staff (18-24 years)
  • Assists the Teen Services Coordinator with the recruitment and processing for summer employment for teens and alumni
  • Responsible for youth supervision, classroom management and managing conduct issues/incidents under the direction of organizational leadership
  • Serves as youth development coach for 5-10 teens
  • Responsible for grant compliance for CESLD grants under the direction of the Grants Manager, including accurate reporting, accomplishment of all grant deliverables and statistical data related to grant compliance
  • Maintains program visuals including flyers and bulletin boards
  • Attends all required staff meetings and trainings. This includes representing the organization at external meetings
  • Required to develop program plans; complete program evaluations and all other necessary reporting
  • Serves on the committee to implement youth events – specifically teen employment showcases, Civic Engagement Spring Break (leadership), Comer Awards Ceremony, various holiday parties and teen conferences
  • Lunch room supervision leadership for snack and dinner service (school year) & lunch service (summer)
  • Supports the mission of GCYC
  • Works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth
  • Is committed to the safety and development of all GCYC members
  • Takes on other duties as needed or as assigned
  • Serves as a role model for youth and community
  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures
Experience & Education
  • College degree required
  • At least two years experience providing instruction to youth in an urban setting
  • Previous youth development experience in an out of school time setting is preferred
Physical Work Requirements
  • Ability to do light lifting
  • Ability to walk and be physically active throughout the day
  • When not instructing, administrative work is completed in a group shared office space
  • Standing and movement with youth during programs, field trips and special events throughout the day
  • 45-hour work week; during school year hours are 11:30am-8:30pm 3 days a week and 10:30-7:30pm two days a week
  • Expected to work at least one Saturday a month to serve as a chaperone for teen intern internship with Exelon
