Position Summary

As a part of the Comer College team, the Upward Bound Program Assistant works with low income, first generation, high school students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college graduates. In addition, the Upward Bound Program Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the Upward Bound and College Preparation programming at the Gary Comer Youth Center. Specifically, this will involve serving as instructor for Upward Bound Excel (homework help for 9th -12th graders), supporting college aged interns from the University of Chicago and other local universities assigned to Excel, and providing administrative support to the Upward Bound and College Preparation Team. 

Qualifications & Requirements
  • High School Diploma
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong commitment to working with students and families from low socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and willingness to receive continued training and education
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide direction and support for college interns assigned to Upward Bound Excel.
  • Assists Manager of College Preparation by providing administrative assistance related to Upward Bound programming.
  • Supervise events and trips designed to help develop cultural competence and college knowledge.
  • Tracks participant attendance in Upward Bound programming
  • Summer responsibilities may shift depending on programmatic needs.
  • Supports the mission of GCYC and works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of all cultures or backgrounds.
  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
