Youth Advisor

Position Summary

The Youth Advisor is responsible for monitoring and providing supports for the social, emotional, physical, and academic growth of an assigned cohort of youth. The advisor will meet with youth individually and in small groups to determine interventions and strategies to maximize each youth's potential growth in the above stated areas. The advisor will develop meaningful relationships with each member of their cohort as well as that member's family and support circle. This is a part-time position, working 20 hours per week. The Youth Advisor reports to the Youth Counseling Manager.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • 1-2 years of experience providing social emotional supports to youth and families in an urban setting.
  • Experience with case management preferred.
  • Able to communicate effectively with youth, co-workers, stakeholders and families.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the youth development philosophy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of guidance and discipline principles as well as conflict resolution strategies.
  • Must demonstrate cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families and community members in our care.
  • Strong meeting facilitation, project management and presentation skills.
  • Competency in MS office applications specifically Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel. Must be open and willing to learn and become proficient at any other software/technology system required for the job. Knowledge of the ETO system is a plus.
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Meet with youth members in small group and one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • Develop and execute strategic interventions to address concerns and enhance strengths.
  • Serve as an assistant to program instructors in afternoon enrichment classes to help support instructors when not conducting 1 on 1 sessions.
  • Serve as an advocate for youth needs within the center and the community as a whole.
  • Provide individual assistance to youth with program registration at the Gary Comer Youth Center.
  • Monitor and communicate youth development goals, objectives and outcomes through outreach to families, staff, members and funders.
  • Communicate with families on a weekly basis to stay in touch with youth’s home life.
  • Administer comprehensive whole-group and one-on-one assessments to measure youth growth and development.
  • Facilitate effective data management of members’ assessments and growth.
  • Provide supportive consultation to colleagues and program providers regarding social emotional or behavior challenges with youth and families.
  • Work with safety team to ensure GCYC follows the restorative justice philosophy
  • Facilitate peace circles on a regular basis.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Support the mission of GCYC.
  • Work collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.
  • Committed to the safety and development of all GCYC members.
  • Take on other duties as needed.
  • Serve as a role model for youth and community.
  • Abide by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.
Experience & Education
  • Some college coursework in related field of social work or youth development is required.
  • Bachelor degree in related field preferred.
Environment & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
