Youth Worker - Youth Development Programming

Position Summary

Youth Worker provides for Gary Comer Youth Center (GCYC) members (ages 10-18) youth development programs in a variety of areas such as academic support, the arts, leadership development, social development or life skills. The Youth Worker is also responsible for the management of program areas and equipment. The position reports to the Associate Program Director.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Flexible schedule for evening and weekend hours; works extended hours for summer program
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth development/programming principles.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of guidance and discipline principles as well as conflict resolution strategies.
  • Must demonstrate cultural competency, dedication to working with youth, families and community members in our care.
  • Strong competency in Microsoft office suite and use of the internet.
Functions & Responsibilities
  • Designs and Implements and /or manages a variety of GCYC programs as well as the ability to run gender specific programming, social & leadership development programming.
  • Maintains program visuals including flyers and bulletin boards.
  • Maintains program equipment and inventory.
  • Attends all required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Responsible for serving as a youth development coach for 10-15 youth.
  • Required to develop program plans; complete program evaluations and all other necessary reporting.
  • Assist in the organization and implementation of youth related special activities/events, as well as spring break & specialty camps
  • Special projects as assigned by the Associate Program Director or the Senior Program Director.
Experience & Education
  • Two plus years of experience working directly with youth and program development preferred. Youth development certification a plus
Physical Work Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to walk and be physically active throughout the day
  • Standing and movement with youth during programs, field trips and special events throughout the day
