During Winter Break, the TRiO Programming team hosted 20 high schoolers for an overnight retreat focused on leadership and community building. Participants were selected and invited based on program engagement, academic performance, and leadership demonstration this fall.
The TRiO Leadership Retreat was an unforgettable experience that helped students grow, connect, and discover more about themselves as leaders. Over two days, participants took part in hands-on activities, deep conversations, and team-building experiences that strengthened trust, confidence, and communication. Activities included a session on leadership and professionalism with a leader in Diversity and Inclusion work. GCYC staff led hands-on workshops building on work readiness skills and college preparation. building sisterhood, brotherhood, and community, students left the retreat feeling empowered and inspired.
Calese H, a senior at Gary Comer College Prep, shared how meaningful the retreat was for her personal growth:
“The TRiO Leadership Retreat was an amazing experience that helped me grow and connect with others in a really meaningful way. We did fun and engaging activities that helped build trust and improve communication, and I felt closer to everyone by the end of the retreat. The group discussions made me think more about my purpose, teamwork, and what it really means to be a leader. I left feeling more confident in myself and motivated to use what I learned in my everyday life and future goals. I also want to thank Ms. Ashley, Ms. Keji, Ms. Mauriah, and Ms. Journey, because without them, I wouldn’t have had the chance to experience something so special.”

Another student, Zakiyah H, reflected on how honored she felt to be selected and how impactful the experience was for her:
“I was one of 20 students chosen to go on the leadership retreat. While I was there, I gained so much knowledge about different topics like community, leadership, sisterhood, brotherhood, and college readiness. I am so thankful for my instructors Mr. Brown, Miss Keji, Miss Journey, Miss Mauriah, and Miss Armani. And let’s not forget the lady who made all of this happen—Miss Ashley! Thank you all so much for this wonderful opportunity. I truly believe this is something many teens should experience. Upward Bound is not just a place to gain postsecondary success, but also a place where you can communicate with others your age, get so many opportunities, and enjoy yourself after a long day of school.”
The retreat created a space where students could reflect on their goals, strengthen their leadership skills, and build real connections with one another. More than just a trip, it was a powerful reminder that Upward Bound is a community that supports students academically, socially, and emotionally.
Through moments of laughter, learning, and leadership, participants walked away with a renewed sense of confidence, purpose, and motivation to continue striving toward their futures.
