What an incredible day for girls' sports and wellness across Chicago! The recent 'She Can Play!' event, held simultaneously at GCYC in Greater Grand Crossing on Chicago's Southside and UCAN in North Lawndale on the Westside, was a resounding success, engaging over 300 girls aged 10-14 in a vibrant day of sports sampling and wellness programming. This massive undertaking truly exemplified the power of collaboration and partnership, bringing together over 10 organizations from the South and West sides. The event brings a three-year commitment to a community of practice focused on girls' sports and wellness to a close.
From trying out new favorites like rugby and flag football to engaging in vital conversations around mental health, every station was filled with energy and smiles. Thanks to the tremendous support from Nike, each girl received essential gear—including sports bras, dry-fit shirts, and hygiene products—removing barriers and encouraging continued participation in sports. With over 100 dedicated volunteers, predominantly young women, the girls saw themselves reflected in empowering coaches, creating an environment where they felt welcomed, loved, and celebrated. 'She Can Play!' not only expanded our network of programming partners but also amplified the critical message of girls' participation in sports on local news. It was a joyful, inspirational, and smoothly run day, reinforcing our collective commitment to continue championing girls' programming and ensuring every girl has the opportunity to thrive in sport and in life!
